Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith Vol. 3 - The Burning Seas

Absolutely brilliant
This series manages to make Vader even more imposing. It really drums home that he is alive only as a vessel of anger and rage. No other mortal could survive his injuries but he is so powerful with the force that he wills himself to go on in fury. The art work is fantastic, some of the best I've seen, and the story is relentlessly compelling. I couldn't put it down. Even if you're a Star Wars fan purely from watching the films I think you'll really enjoy this series.

Another villain gets the Marvel makeover
“Star Wars: Darth Vader – The Burning Seas” collects issue #13-18 and Annual #2 of the current (second) series of Darth Vader’s ongoing biography, set in the period before “Rogue One”, unlike the main title which is set after “Episode IV”.The title story – issues #13-17 – co-incidentally with the latest volume of the main Star Wars title, is set on the water-world of Mon Cala, and shows how the situation seen over in “Star Wars” came about.A “new” character also joins Vader on the centre-stage, a certain Moff Tarkin, as the Emperor once more places Vader under the authority of a more senior Imperial officer; no doubt to test both of them.As always, the Marvel version of Star Wars puts the film versions to shame in the imagination of the artist and the depth of characterisation and motivation of the main characters, and even the minor ones, which includes a certain Gial Ackbar.Issue #18 is a stand-alone story, though arising from the main one, and after the shock of the opening scene, you should realise quite quickly what is going on.The Annual, although by another writer/artist team, is also very good, features both the main characters from the preceding stories, and serves as a prequel to “Rogue One”, as Vader investigates sabotage on the planet Genosis, where a certain secret weapon is being constructed, and also investigates what Tarkin is up to…As I said above, Marvel’s comics are simply putting the films into the shade with the depth of their characterisation and with the imagination of their artists, who are not constrained by the cold, dead hand of fannish expectation and the producers’ fear of upsetting them. Maybe now that they are starting to fail, they’ll give the job to Marvel Studios – just imagine what could be done with the Vader character if they were to adapt the core of the current and previous series…

Absolutely awesome, best so far in the series.
Star Wars Vol. 3: The Burning Seas collects Darth Vader (2017) #13-18 and Annual #2. For #13-18 it's the standard team of Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli and Chuck Wendig(W) and Leonard Kirk(A) who handled the Annual. I should say I borrowed this copy from my local library, and is why there's a plastic cover on it that may give a shine in the pictures. The story here is a Jedi is suspected to be Mon Cala and interfering with the negotiations between the Empire and Mon Cala. Vader is tasked with going to Mon Cala and investigating if there is a Jedi presence, upon arrival events occur and war breaks out and Tarkin is already prepared over the planet ready to aid the Empire. This was a blast and in my opinion so far, the best in the series. We see some old characters from the movies play a large role throughout this comic and added to the story making you care more about these old fan favourites. The story was fun throughout, this isn't just some small mission Vader is tasked with that he could handle on his own, there is a war going on throughout with plenty of action and has some awesome artwork that I loved. This is a more entertaining and action packed than the last volume and it's a huge impact. This was the most fun I've had throughout Soule's run so far, I especially loved the scenes with Vader and Tarkin and it added to the relationship and how they behave towards one another. A fantastic read than any fan of Darth Vader should read. #18 is a story of its own but focuses on Vader and Tarkin and was unique and just as entertaining as the previous issues, I can't get into the specifics without spoiling anything so I'll save it as a surprise for the reader. The Annual was interesting, it's sort of a prequel to Rogue One, where Vader learns of project stardust which has been hidden from him, he is tasked with finding out who is sabotaging the operation and take care of it. It was a pretty interesting read that was enjoyable and added to and made me want to watch Rogue One again.Overall, this was a fantastic Volume, I loved the 3 separate stories told, the war that's ongoing on Mon Cala with Vader and the Inquisitors hunting for a Jedi threat was awesome, the artwork was stellar as well and all I simply need to say is pick it up and give it a read. I hope the next and last volume from Soule is as enjoyable as this.Hopefully you found this review helpful and happy reading.
