Q: How does the sensor work? The light output does not seem to drop when I block the beam.

The sensor is designed to activate when the light detects an obstrution upon first powering on. After that, it is temporarily disabled until light is turned off and on again. Note that it may be less effective if the obejct is dark or non-reflective.
