No USA Mason/Kerr/Ball lid fits this jar. IMHO they should not say "Mason".
Gallon filter Vine review. Brand: DIATOMITECOHistory:Mason jars were started & patented in 1958 in New Jersery by John Landis Mason. In 1915, Alexander Kerr contributed the two piece seal cap to create the perfect canning jars. Mason jars, whether by Mason, Kerr or Ball in the USA all came to have standardized lid sizes of either “regular” or “wide mouth”. IMHO, we have greatly benefited by adhering to that standardization. There is no such standard for a jar lid for this sized filter, and until there is, calling this a Mason jar? As they say: That’s not right! You can find that here on Amazon there are several foreign companies claiming mouths that are “extra wide”, “super wide” and probably several other names. IMHO, Buy at your own risk and own research. Finally, I think you will find that Mason jar manufacturers and users will state that canning is not recommended in gallon sizes. Why call it a Mason Jar? Why not a 1 Gallon Jar? Enough soap box!Review:So for this oversized filter, my photos and review attempt to demonstrate what jar, with its simple lid, will work for you. As luck would have it, my girl suggested the 80 oz. Dilly sliced dill pickle plastic jar we had, and it fits! And the plastic lid screws on… reasonably well. That provides an easy way to 1. Get a measure for what will work. 2. Test the filter skills of this filter. For jar lid compatibility, this flange measures 4.125”. That must fit inside your lid. For jar compatibility, it is about 3.5” wide that must fit inside your jar. So if you have a jar opening of 3.4" or less, this should fit, 3.6" will not fit.For filter skills, this claims to be “ultra fine” 150 microns. So I tested it against the amazing Lafeeca cold brew filter and my former favorite Bean Envy.Let me first say that "fines" are not necessarily bad for a filter like this. Teas and infusions will probably not need this kind of examination.Second, I had a large quantity of coarse ground coffee that I was not likely to brew due to age and taste, so I used that for this test after shaking up the grounds. I made three batches of room temperature brew, each exactly the same except for the filter. Each had 6 Tbs of ground coffee and 6 cups of water. They were gently swirled every hour for the first 3 hours, then left overnight. In the morning I carefully poured off the top 5/6 of the brew, then poured the bottom 1/6 over a paper towel. The photos show the results. BTW, Lafeeca is in a sold out status as I write this. And again, some will say the Lafeeca screens out too much!RatingIf you can find a jar or other receptacle that fits this, I would not hesitate to use it for infusions or tea bags. There are some that do not mind “fines” in their cold brew coffee, in fact like it. So I would not want to deduct for that alone. I do think any filter company ought to state the microns, and they state 150 so I can’t detract for that. Price is competitive with gallon filters. However, I do not like the commandeering of the “Mason” name for this filter or any non standard sized opening jar, and I must detract for that since no USA Mason jar lid will fit this. 3 star review.Adjusted RyanL Vine Voice rating scale:* Well below expectations. Nice quality filter, but doesn't fit my jar
I have 1-gallon and ½ gallon mason jars that I like to use for cold brewed coffee/tea. Both fit well into my fridge and are perfect for the task. The half-gallon jars have their own steel filter insert so I can brew 2 batches at once before dumping them into the gallon jar for storage. I thought this would allow me to eliminate that extra step and brew my tea directly in the gallon jar. This looks like a quality mesh filter. The filters I am currently using have a gasket that fit on the rim to prevent leaking once the lid is in place. This filter does not. However, it does appear to be a finer mesh (150 microns) and better quality.I did not expect this to fit into the ½ gallon jars. It does not. However, I did expect it to fit the gallon jar. It does not do that either. The tube fits inside the jar, but the rim overhangs the edge, and the lid won’t screw on. This means I can’t use it with my current 1-gallon jar.Needless to say, it is a bit disappointing, but it is a quality filter and if it fit my jar I would be happy with it.
