Couldn't Finish It
Great acting, nice attention to detail regarding the script, but most of the characters were annoying. The phrase "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" played in my head SO many times.SPOILER----------The villain made no sense, why are you killing innocent workers who build a weapon you hate, with a weapon you hate, because your fam died in a WAR. What? I guess someone had already shot the president, so he had to blame it on the guns they were using? How did he know they were using Winchesters? They WEREN'T using Winchesters, the closest thing they had were Henry repeating rifles. They had one model type, out of the forty five different rifles used (most of which were Springfields). The villain managed to see those one or two of union soldiers using something that resembled a Winchester through the cloud of smoke and madness. WHY DID I RESEARCH THIS!?Sarah certainly effed off with that "No guns in the house" policy once the ghosts (who even she claimed were sometimes sketchy) said they wanted guns in the house. What? Isn't that like the biggest red flag? Why would you store, them loaded? Why was the husky gentleman in the bowler cap (great mutton chops btw) carrying a rifle in the house? Now your personally endorsing the weapon in the place you built to appease the victims of that weapon. Why did therapist dude think it would be wise to do the "floating dollar" trick on Sarah? Even if she didn't understand it, see wouldn't have been amused. Her personality leading up to that point, as well as the cues from other characters should have told him it was a bad idea. Why couldn't this have just been a movie about a lady who thinks she sees ghosts, but is actually out of her mind? Then you find out that the staff and workers are in on it so they can continue to get steady employment? Sound dumb? Maybe... idk... I'm sleepy...

Surprisingly enjoyable
When this movie first came out and I read the reviews and saw the trailers I decided I didn't want to see it. I was surprised that a star as exceptional as Helen Mirren would agree to be in a horror flick. However, last night I couldn't find anything else to watch so I rented it. It was surprisingly good, for the most part. I've been to the Winchester Mystery House several times on different tours. The place is so huge you cannot see it all in one tour. It is beautiful, but also eerie with such odd staircases, and doors that open into deep shafts and doors that only open into walls. The story is this film was taken from the true fears of Mrs. Winchester who lived there in the late 1800's through the early 1920's and was convinced that she was cursed by all those who had died by the Winchester rifle. She was told by a medium that she must keep building on to the house in order to keep the spirits at bay. Although there aren't doors with 13 nails in them, many of the rooms have motifs or candelabras with 13 in them. I thought the writes did a pretty good job of adapting the story, though much of it is imagination. There are a few parts that don't make a lot of sense,, but all in all it was actually enjoyable and was more of a ghost story rather than a horror movie. I am not a horror movie fan and don't like gore and was happy this didn't have any of that. Mrs. Winchester died in the early 1920's and left the furnishings to her niece, but the house was not mentioned in her will. It was auctioned off a year later and leased to a couple who turned it into the museum it is today. At the end of the movie there is an actual photo of Mrs. Winchester in her carriage. She looks a lot like Queen Victoria and not at all like Helen Mirrin . I had to laugh at the comments about it being "left wing propaganda against guns" which is funny considering that this was Mrs. Winchester's beliefs in the late 1800s. LOL!

An entertaining movie
Not the most fascinating movie, but one that I've seen more than once and would watch again. Parts can be slow and parts can be shocking. If you are looking for a true thriller, perhaps don't pick this one. Although, if you are looking for a ghost movie, this may be a great fit. The ending may leave the viewer looking for a sequel. This version of the Winchester story is possibly the best one (in my option) that has been made into a movie. My copy arrived in new condition for a great price.

My guiltiest pleasure!
The guiltiest of all guilty pleasure movies, I absolutely love this! Yes it’s generic, unoriginal and hokey but it is also immensely watchable and passes the time quite pleasantly. True, Helen Mirren must have been desperate and phones it in but the other actors look like they *really* believe what’s going on. Many ask how much they had to pay Dame Helen to be in it, but with a budget of only $3 million, the question we should be asking is how LITTLE they paid her. Disengage your brain and give “Winchester” a chance and you’ll find much to love - Jason Clarke’s performance, the elaborate sets, Sarah Snook’s hairdo. And it’s way better than any of the Conjuring films!

This movie doesn't deliver....
I waited ever so patiently for this movie to be released on disc in the UK and I can't express my disappointment at losing an hour and half of my life that I won't get back again 😖 The overall Victorian architecture was stupendous and Helen Mirren's acting was equally as good. But the acting storyline and plot was poorly achieved. I had big hopes for this film I thought it was gonna be an out of this world supernatural film but it was a lot of hype about nothing! As I've watched it I can't return it to Amazon so I'll be donating it to my local animal charity shop

Not scary and filled with too many cheesy plot holes
Not scary. It’s has a good story but I feel the ending got too cheesy and too rushed. Too many plotholes as well which made the movie a bit silly. Even the twist in the story wasn’t a jaw dropping twist. I’d recommend this dvd if trapped in your home in a zombie apocalypse and you’ve got nothing else to watch.

Weird but true
What a strange story, apparently based on fact. Mirren plays an eccentric widow, heiress to a fortune from Winchester rifles. She starts to build a very large, rambling house which then appears to be haunted. It’s an interesting story, a little slow in places, but enough to keep me interested to the end. Enjoyed it.

Watchable!!
I quite liked this film. Despite critics, I thought it was pretty sound movie based on Winchester family ties in well as type of horror story. Not the top drawer, but seen a lot worse.
