I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I'm reading books set in northern New Mexico and Cather's descriptions of the starkly beautiful landscape brought me into a vivid time and place. The characters were expertly drawn. I felt a connection to the priests and to the severe but spiritually rich lives they led on the American frontier, as well as their respect for the Pueblo Indians and the Mexican settlers who were all part of this fascinating community. It's a gentle, unhurried, yet engaging portrait of a time long gone, one I hope to experience myself soon.

So Many Great Things About This Book
A simple but powerful story and one of the best books set in New Mexico. It's a study in contrasts whether between personalities, different cultures, the landscape, family dynamics, progress or a commitment and faith in God. The beauty here is striping complexity down to a simple cadence and bringing you on the life journey. Sit down, relax and enjoy.

What a beautiful and inspiring story.
It was a story about the missionary work of the Catholic Church in the Southwest that I was never aware of the French Missions.
