Nice Introduction to Colonial Southern Intellectual History
“A Colonial Southern Bookshelf” is a series of lectures from Richard Beale Davis and offers something of a condensed version--or better yet an introduction--to his three-volume history on intellectual life in the colonial South. To be clear, Davis is only looking at the British colonies, covering Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia. He offers interesting insights into the political, religious, classical, dramatic, poetic and other books read by elites in those colonies. Still, the book lacks notes and a bibliography which is disappointing. I’d offer 4.25 stars if possible which lowers my rating to 4 stars. Recommended.
