Awe-inspiring read!
If you enjoyed "Having Our Say" by the famed Delany sisters or Alex Haley's later work "Mama Flora's Family" and/or works by notable Christian authors ranging from Elisabeth Elliot and Catherine Marshall to Serita Jakes and Sarah Jakes Roberts, this book is for you! If you love reading narratives about the struggles and triumphs of real African-American families on their journeys to achieve education, affluence, and ultimately reconciliation, you need to get this book.Although presented as a novel, make no mistakes about it: her book reads like a very personal memoir with names changed to protect the innocent and guilty. Yet, far from being a sensational tell-all, Mrs. Bird's work is instead a very well-written tale of self-determination, personal accountability and spiritual growth for Mona, the titular character, written from the standpoint of a seasoned living testimony. At the time of publication, Mrs. Bird was 95 years young, still full of intellectual brilliance, an innate sense of humor, and a wealth of 20/20 spiritual vision that readers, both old and young, can glean much from. I truly hope we see more from this first-time published author.I personally would love to see her work converted to the screen. How 'bout it, T.D. Jakes, Oprah, BET, Tyler Perry, TBN, DayStar, and all y'all?
