Director Garry Marshall's 1988 drama Beaches about the 30-year friendship between two women, one wealthy (Barbara Hershey) and the other (Bette Midler) seeking her fortune in show business, is well written (based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart) and nicely textured in its contrast between the characters' separate destinies. When Hershey becomes ill with cancer, the film takes a predictably sentimental course, yet Marshall brings out the best in both actresses and catches some very fine drama. Beaches is a little too long, perhaps, but overall it is a fine experience. -- Tom Keogh Modern weepie which traces the ups and downs of unlikely friends C.C. (Bette Midler), a brash singer, and Hillary (Barbara Hershey), a conservative rich girl. Meeting as children on a beach in Atlantic City, the two swear lifelong friendship, but don't meet up again until they are in their twenties. C.C. becomes a star, Hillary a lawyer, and they grow apart - but when Hillary contracts a fatal virus, C.C. rushes to her side' Review: Shame that one actress is in it as a kid iykyk - This film has been one of my favourites since I was a kid. If you just need a good old fashioned film (and a good cry) then give it a shot Review: A film i highly recommend!! - I absolutely love this film! A bit dated, but overall a good watch
I fancied watching a bit of weepy film and hadn't seen this for years, so I rented it from Amazon Video. I chose the SD version as I wasn't that bothered about picture quality when using my iPad. The quality wasn't that great, but I'm not sure how different the HD version would be given that it's such an old film. Although looking a bit dated now, this film stands the test of time as it's such a fantastic portrayal of friendship, and how it evolves over the years. Bette Midler gives a great performance and I'd forgotten how well the younger version of herself was matched to the character. In a nutshell, two young girls from very different worlds meet on holiday and remain penpals over the years. They become flat mates in their 20's, before circumstance separates them again. When life doesn't turn out as expected, the two women reconnect, but unfortunately the path to this friendship never runs smoothly. No spoilers here, if by some miracle you haven't seen this already. Overall a great watch. I'm a massive fan of old school 80's movies as they speak to me of a simpler time. This film will make you laugh, make you cry (a lot) and keep you hooked from beginning to end. ***I try to be as candid as possible in my reviews, which I'm sure you will gather. a firm fave - if you haven't seen it then give it a go TW: emotional
greast acting from bette midler and a moving tear jerker - have the tissues to hand. good supporting actors and touching without being nauseating. it's so well known and rightly so - well worth a watch

Classic
I loved this film when I was younger and when I watched it again recently, for the first time in many years, it was so moving. Poignant and memorable. Oh and now I know why Amy from The Big Bang Theory always seemed familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it! (Mayim Bialik plays little CC Bloom.) So glad I watched it again, after all these years.
