Understanding and Applying Medical Anthropology

Great book to accompany a Medical Anthropology course
chances are you're not buying/renting this book to read on your own on a chilly Saturday night. You're buying this book because you just enrolled in a medical anthropology course and there's a good chance, much like me, you have no idea what you're getting into. Well, in my case, I found the course to be very interesting and this book in particular was very through provoking. it covers a very wide range of topics and if I wasn't already enrolled as a computer science major, I may have considered switching majors. The book is great in other words, if you're worried about the course however, I can't help you there, but chances are you're going to learn a lot if you're not majoring in this subject.

An easy, interesting read
As far as textbooks go, this is an easy read. I used this book for a medical anthropology class along with three others. Due to a misunderstanding of the syllabus, I found myself 3 weeks (20 chapters behind) by the time I started this book. I had a major panic attack and thought there was no way I would be able to catch up in time for my first test given that textbooks are usually very boring and hard for me to focus on.Thank the heavens this book is actually very interesting. Each chapter is a different case study. I easily blew through 6 chapters a day and got caught up in a single weekend. I wish all of my textbooks were as interesting as this one.

Everything was great
Everything about the experience of buying the book was great. Unfortunately this is one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to use. It is just words on the page with two columns and it is fairly small print so if you have a hard time concentrating then you will not like this book. The articles are not very exciting to read and it will bore you to death. For a heavy topic what I recommend is that book publishers use some more color and some graphics - charts pictures - something! I have had courses in computer science that are more interesting than this! I absolutely hate this book. Not the seller's fault - it is my professor'a fault for assigning us this garbage.

This book is a great book. It definitely is very insightful and helps to deepen my knowledge of not only medical anthropology but how I should put things in addition to healthcare on so many much more perspectives. I have learned much from this book when using it in class and I would recommend anyone, even if you're not required to buy this book, to read this book because there are so many interesting chapters included in this book.

Good read, Bad textbook
This test book was purchased as a required material for my Medical Anthropology class. I find that using it as a method of learning what medical anthropology is a rather mediocre method. I do not find myself learning much in the class, and I am maintaining and A. I would have liked to see more terms being defined rather that articles posted by other anthropologists.

I used this book as a textbook to teach a graduate level Med Anthro course. As a former student of Peter Brown, it was an obvious choice. Most of my students were physicians, nurses and dentists working on an MPH. I found it to be an excellent format, and the case studies were terrific "launch points" for lively discussions. Some material feels "dated", but overall it is a great introduction to the subject.
