Great product if you understand how it works
If you have been around the Coleman Gasoline lanterns, than this product will be an easy transition. I chose this over the white gas lantern due to my perception of safety (using kerosene vs. gasoline), and the ready availability/low cost of kerosene vs. the coleman white gas fuel. The only downside of this unit vs the traditional Coleman gas is the kerosene version requires a pre-burn of alcohol to heat the vapor tube and warm the mantle. This is very simple, once you are set up for it, but it does add a requirement and the necessity to carry the small alcohol squirt bottle they provide to prime fill the pre-burn cup. Once warm, the unit fires right up on it's kerosene fuel. She burns very bright, with virtually no odor. If I was choosing between propane, gas, or Kerosene, I would choose this; although they all have their pros and cons. I won't go to comparisons between the three, as there are tons of other reviews to provide this. We all understand an LED battery lantern is the quickest to set up and transport, this is a totally different product that should be supplemented by battery lights with your camping gear. If purchasing this, definitely get the Coleman carrying case. It's the way to go. Somewhat pricey for a plastic box, but it makes the experience better. You will need a small can of denatured alcohol and some wooden matches, or an extension wire for a paper match to light the pre-burn cup through the globe. I enjoy mine so much I light it on our patio table at night, while grilling; despite having plenty of outdoor lights at my house. It provides a great atmosphere. It's like comparing a wood stove to an electric heater. They both accomplish warms, but the atmosphere is completely different.

Great Lantern, poor packaging
I just can't praise this lantern enough, Coleman fuel 10 a gallon, kerosene is 4 a gallon. I ordered 2 and they came in one large box together, no packing material on bottom of large box = one shattered globe. Amazon customer service quickly satisfied me but it is still very frustrating to open a box and hear that broken glass sound, just real frustrating. I was going to order several more but now I don't think I will I'm a little gun shy right now. We live in a rural area and I use them for the barns, just real bright, painfully bright, easy to light. Denatured alcohol or in a pinch I've used rubbing alcohol in the preheat cup. I have never had an issue with lighting these, there is an extra step with the preheat cup but as I mentioned the cost of kerosene over Coleman fuel is hard to ignore. I will end up buying several more of these to light our camp site up and for our out buildings, I just may not order through amazon due to lack of packing on this order. Yes there is a slight smell but nothing too strong. Just a great outdoor device for utility and recreation purposes.Update: I am getting about 6 hours burn time on high setting. The weather has finally broke and it's warm enough to be out at night, these really push back the darkness. Great product for non electric outdoors events.20 April 2013: Bought another and it arrived in excellent condition, not a bit of damage.

Wish I had found this years ago.
This is a solid product. I am an avid Coleman lantern collector. I have inherited, collected and refurbished Coleman lanterns and stoves from the 1950's, 1960's,1970's. Have about a dozen 'dual-fuel' lanterns so far. This lantern beats them all for it's simplicity of use. No fussing with the temperamental generator valve as with a dual-fuel. It's one down side is that you need ethanol in some form to pre-heat the generator to vaporize the kerosene. This is true for all pressure kerosene lanterns, though. The different comes in when you slowly open the valve, just a bit before the ethanol is burned off - The kerosene fuel softly ignites thus avoiding the startling paWHOOF of the gas lanterns. It burns quieter, also.As with all pressure lanterns, it should be pumped up again after it has burned for a few minutes.K-1 grade kerosene, and any denatured alcohol from the hardware store, works great in this. One potential downside - shipping: The globe protection inside the package is not the best when facing rough handling. Coleman should address this. Coleman could not sell/ship me a replacement globe.Instead, Coleman shipped & replaced the entire lantern. Great customer service. Alternatively, extra globes can be purchased from Lehmann's.
