Halo: Divine Wind

Finally some S2 Red Team and S3 Action
Troy Denning has done a good job with the series starting with his first novel of Last Light. This story continues the plotline of Veta Lopez, the ferrets (some of the remaining S3s), and some of the Halo Wars 2 characters (Pavium and Decimus). Castor is on the cover, with Veta, as well as Gadogan and the Prelate... don't know who any of these characters are? Well it seems that you need to read 1-2 books to catch yourself up before reading this one.A certain trio of Spartan 2s from Halo Wars appear in the last 20-30 pages and there is a highly tragic death of a Spartan 3, but he fought until his very last breath, literally. It sucks that Denning completely changed the characterization of the HW S2's, but still, somehow, managed to continue how the S3's of Ferret Team were originally portrayed in Ghosts of Onyx (though this might be easier considering they didn't talk much, back then, and especially since one was a mute, who now talks).Again, he's no Eric Nylund, but he's as close as we're going to get in 2022.

Starts slowly and not one of my favorite Halo books!
This is a good book but not one of my favorites of the Halo series. Troy Denning is a good author and I like his work but I found this book a little slow to start and attract my interest. I wound up also buying the Audible version of the book just to listen to the story and get the book finished.I found the start of the book to move to slowly and there was a lot of bantering back and forth between the characters. The end of the book is very good and that is why it still got 4 stars from me.The end of the story leads us into another potential book from Denning but I hope it is more action and less conversations. If you are a Halo book fanlike I am you have to read this but just don’t expect Denning’s best book or something as good as Eric Nylund’s books.

You never see it coming how invested you become in the characters
The book follows the career of the gammas with veta lopis. The story is gripping and ultimately heart breaking. An amazing victory against all odds. A book I had a hard time accepting was over.

Another great addition to the Ferret team story.
I find myself with a mix of emotions after finishing this book, and that's how it should be. I love Dennings books, getting better and better as he writes, and I already can't wait for a hopeful a new installment of the series. Mark this series down and a competitor as my favorite series, right up there with the Kilo 5 Trilogy. Well done.

Disappointed
Starting off, I’ve been a Halo fan since CE and own most of the novels and all of the games. That said, this was the most disappointing Halo novel I’ve read. Spoilers ahead for those who care.I really like last light; it’s genuinely interesting to me to see Lopis’ interaction as a semi “normal” person with Spartans. Then we hit Divine Wind and this lady keeps up in multiple fights with her S3 squad without a scratch despite being literally normal while they come out critically injured, and multiple times comes up with tactical solutions Cutter and SoF/Isabelle apparently can’t think of because reasons. Plus the nonsensical vore porn Denning has become infamous for in Star Wars circles and multiple lore breaking events. Really, they arrive at the Ark via portal and phase crash into a SoF baselard fighter, and Lopis mercy kills the pilot who ends up in their Lich with 3rd degree burns because it “materialized in the same space” despite slipspace not working that way in Halo. Then multiple people get eaten by mechanical water beetles like it’s the Mummy. And THEN, when the S3’s contact SoF by cleverly painting the eventual rescue pelican with a laser sight to trigger its sensors, after it lands the pilot gets EATEN by some squid hellbeast waiting in a lake and his severed leg bubbles to the surface like something from Jurassic park. THEN, at the end of the book, not only are the Spartan 3’s critically injured, the prophet super soldier comes sprinting out of an Fing tunnel in the mountainside after being thrown down the bottomless pit of the Ark control room WHILE SoF is lobbing MAC rounds at it, survives a beam laser that cuts through his armor, and kills Mark. All while Alice, Douglas, etc in a pursuit Pelican gunship literally within sight distance remain oblivious to the threat marker that would be well within radar distance. So many choices in this book were just for drama. The banished have the same super plot armor as in Infinite, Das Basvod introduces himself by butchering a brute in front of his pack and nobody cares, and once again the UNSC gets to play catch with the stupid ball so the aliens are a “threat” despite HW2 ending with Cutter and crew having the only warship and kicking Atriox’ ass so bad he put a dent in his table and went home. Tldr; in my opinion extremely disappointing and lore breaking purely for plot convenience to fit the “soft reboot” of Halo Infinite and hype 343i’s new pet the Banished to old fans.

A Good Story
In my quest to read all the Halo stories this was my latest. Mr Denning has done an admirable job with this storyline.

Another great Halo book
Following on from a side plot in Shadows of Reach, this book continues the story of Veta Lopis and her undercover ferret team, as a sequel to Last Light and Retribution. As the story takes place on the Ark I would recommend reading up on the story of Halo Wars 2, and a short story called "Sacrifice" which you can find online, as they give you a good understanding of the setting. No spoilers, but towards the end there is a small tease for the future of Halo's story, and it's pretty interesting, so if you like keeping up with the lore you'll probably want to read this.
