I have a 4wd ford escape and husband has a full size 4wd chevy pickup. will it work for both of these vehicles?

A 4step may be able to work if you are going in the back and if he can use the door jam part. It will not reach his seat or the tailgate in a 4 step that would have to be a 5 step.You can always add a step but it takes about 15 minutes of time.Evon WhalenPetloader815 765 1957

All 5 steps will reach 40 inches and the distance between the step is 9 1/2 inches If that same Petloader was at 29 inches the distance between the steps is 7 1/2

How do I know whether I need a 3 or 4 step?

I have a Volvo suv and I probably could have gotten by with the 3 step, but ordered the 4 step. It depends on how high your vehicle is, and how steep your dog can handle. The further out you pull it, the less steep it is. It works great for my 60lb. medium size dog.
