Oh Dear!: A lift-the-flap book

Timeless: the litmus test of a great book
This clever, engaging book has everything curious young minds could wish for: flaps to open (of course!), a funny story, animals to identify, and catchy phrases to repeat on every page. My kids loved this 30 years ago, and now I’m discovering the joy all over again with my 2 little grandsons. For anyone who’s not familiar with the story, it’s about a toddler called Buster who goes to stay at his grandma’s farm and gets sent out to collect eggs. He goes to all the different places where animals are kept — barn, sty, field, stable, kennel, hutch and pond — but keeps getting told ‘No eggs here’. It’s only when he reaches the henhouse that he remembers who lays eggs and gets two to take back for breakfast. It’s a brilliant story for reading aloud and getting the little ones involved: perfect for making lots of animal noises, facial expressions and gestures. My younger grandson is just turning 2, and he really throws himself into the fun, shouting out the name of each animal and jumping in with the ‘Oh dear!!’ and ‘No eggs here’ at all the right times. The book is also visually very appealing for toddlers: large font, minimal words, loads of white space, and illustrations that are kept simple but still offer lots to talk about: Grandma’s cat, the honey bee, the bunnies hiding in the hedge, the mummy bird feeding her chicks, the mouse sneaking water from the dog’s bowl ... It really is a book that children can look at over and over again and still get something new out of every time.Quality wise, it’s a sturdy hardback with thick board pages and flaps that can withstand quite rough treatment. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful. Check out my profile page for more reviews of toddler books and puzzles and educational toys and games.
