A bit pricey for a simple device, but it works
Works great on our 4 inch square banister

Nothing about this is designed to work with a baby or pet gate.
1. The product description mentions that it can fit posts as thin as 1.5 inches in one place, and 2 3/4 inches another place. The 1.5 inch number is incorrect.2. The height of these brackets is about 1.5 inches. The distance between the screws on the mounting brackets of most baby gates is farther apart than the wood will accept. Translation: you will shoot a screw over and under the bracket with a lot of baby gates.3. The thickness of the wood that accepts the screws from the gate is about 5/8 inches. The screws on any safe gate are long enough to extrude through the bracket into the wood you're trying to protect.

Alas!
Didn’t need them after all. Neither Amazon nor Cardinal would accept return of this expensive order. I was outside the return date as there was a family loss; neither Amazon nor Cardinal would concede /refund.Cardinal, which sells through Amazon, does make a great gate. Just be sure to have a handy person to install it: complicated.

Mis-represented product. Rip-off
This product is described as a "kit" which makes you think that 1 kit will work for 1 gate, however 1 "kit" only comes with 2 blocks of wood with nuts and bolts whereas you usually need 2 attachment points to install 1 gate. The description does not state that you may need 2 "kits" for 1 gate. You are forced to buy another kit and pay for more shipping or take the hit for "re-stocking fee" and lose your shipping and handling cost.

this thing is a rip off~
We bought this and then realized that we didnt need it. But anyhow, after shipping the thing cost $20 for two little blocks of wood and a couple bolts. You can make one yourself for probably $5! What a rip off!

Poorly made, falls apart, impossible to open the latch.
The lock latch is impossible to open, especially while holding a child. Poorly designed. Middle section held together by flimsy screw and keeps breaking. Very unsatisfied with this purchase.
