Microwave Collection Steamer, Medium, 83.5 oz./2.4 L, Red

I've had this little steamer for just over a year now and, as I'm steaming something right now, figured it was a good time to write a quick review. Long story short, Love It. Short story longer... I use this little steamer at least 3 times a week. Being single I don't need any larger. And if you're not, you WILL want at least a size larger than this. Using it is simple: Just add a little bit of water in the bottom, put in the tray, snap on the top (It does take a tiny bit of effort to snap on tight), open the vent and *nuke* for 5 mins or so depending on the portion and power of microwave. For the record, I've only used this for veggies, so for any meats 'n such, this may not apply. As for cleaning, I hand wash it. It may or may not be machine safe, but for some things I don't leave it to chance. This way I don't even have to think about it. One thing of note, I recall seeing something about 'oiling' or something in the instructions... yea, DON'T. Oils, plastic, and a microwave don't mix well. Just make sure that when you use it, it's clean and free from cooking oils and it'll hold up just fine. Or at least, mine has. I've loved this thing, its been great. Hope this helps!

I have been very impressed with the Sistema Microwave Cookware Steamer. I bought both a small and a large size model. It has been perfect for putting together quick dinners with healthy steamed veggies. Could not be easier or simpler to use. Goes in the dishwasher, although top rack is probably best. Probably the best thing is that it allows you to use the cook top for making other parts of dinner rather than worrying on a pot getting up to a boil and timing and so forth. So you can get dinner done and also have the vegetables or even small potatoes ready via the microwave and have all reach the goal line of ready to plate on time. RECOMMENDED.

I ordered 3 of these, one for myself and two others as gifts. I would have given this product a 5 star rating, but the container in the middle of the package had a badly cracked lid. This made me feel that it was shipped this way since the other two were fine. I am in the process of returning the defective steamer, and I hope that goes well. I have used it several times. It cooks vegetables beautifully and they taste so much better steamed! It's also very easy to clean. I would recommend this product!

The medium steamer is great for steaming veggies for two people. I actually bought it so I could steam vegetables for work lunches instead of reheating pre-cooked veggies, and found it had more than enough room for what I needed. It will fit a 16 oz bag of frozen vegetables perfectly. It's very easy to use. Just put some water in the bottom, put your food in the plastic tray, snap on the lid, open the vent, and pop it in the microwave! I originally deducted one star because the color was not as advertised (even though I liked the color I received better than the one I thought I was getting). However, I have noticed that since I bought mine the description has been changed to reflect that the color will be random, so I decided to leave it at 5 stars.

I have trouble cooking anything because of various health issues. My wife told me that I am the only person she ever knew who could actually burn water. Essentially, I can stand over a pot of boiling water and forget about it until the smoke alarm goes off, then I have to go out and buy another pot. Sistema products have solved all of my cooking problems!!! I can even poach eggs and do it SUCCESSFULLY!! Cooking on top of a stove or in the oven requires constant monitoring, which I am obviously not very good at, anymore. Whether you cook with gas or electric there can be dangerous situations from a child's burned hand to burning down your house. I have never heard of these things happening with a microwave. When the timer runs out, the cooking stops. You still need to check that the amount of time you programmed in is correct. I have already made that mistake recently and had to throw away my dinner and the Sistema Cookware it was overcooked in. When my VA check comes I'll be buying more cookware from Sistema. They have provided me with hot meals again!

I've been using microwave steamers for over 30 years. My other ones are getting old, but still work. They don't even make that particular product anymore and I wanted something new. I researched a lot of them and this one caught my eye. I love the little piece in the center of the inner basket that allows me to pull it out of the steamer and not burn my fingers. It also has sides on the basket that keeps everything from falling out...that's a plus for me. I can even fit an artichoke in this one, if I trim off the sharp edges and stem, then cut it in half, which is what I like to do, anyway. It cleans up easily and I like the way it looks. My other steamers aren't as cute as this one. I also like the valve at the top that allows the steam to release. I can also close it, when wanting to keep things hot after it's done cooking. I wasn't sure if I'd like the locking feature, but it's very handy when transporting it from the microwave. Great Design! I will probably buy another one and maybe give one as a thoughtful gift. Everyone should have one of these.

Steamer works great. So far just some veggies, but will get into chicken or steaming eggs. No noticeable smell after using it. I spray a light coat of Pam and when it gets done, just rinse real good. I did notice you have to monitor the water level to what you are steaming, you could dry out the veggies a little. It takes some trial and error. i just use a cup of water and start at 4 minutes and then adjust accordingly. Like most feedback for this, there are no real instructions. But this is well worth the buy, no more big bulky stack able steamers that are a pain to clean. This thing is a breeze.

PROS: • Great steamer for frozen or fresh vegetables, and even rice • Vent on top of lid allows steam to escape, preventing pressure build up that can cause food to explode and splatter all over the inside of the steamer • Slitted basket ensures food stay above the water while allowing the water bellow to evaporate, creating steam that rises and cooks the food evenly • Slitted basket allows for water fill with or without the basket inside • Handle in the middle of the basket makes it easier to lift the food out without using utensils to manually pull it out • Each corner of the lid is raised to provide grip for lifting the lid off more easily • Steaming reduces cook time, allowing vegetables to retain most of its nutrients instead of escaping out into the boiling water when cooking it on a stove • No more waiting for water boil like in traditional stove top cooking • Works great for the student dorm life • Save money on having to purchase cooking bags and dispose of it after each use CONS: • Lid can be cumbersome to put on as other reviewers have mentioned, as it must be aligned properly for the latches to snap into place • Basket handle design is a waste of space as less food can fit since it has to be placed surrounding the handle • "Middle stalk of steamer basket stays cool so you can lift food out after cooking" mentioned in description is deceptive because the "stalk", i.e. handle is still hot from the steam after being cooked, and has to be cooled at least a minute before handling • Lifting tabs are not "cool-to-the-touch" and can cause serious burns if lifted immediately after being cooked, therefore must wait at least a minute for it to cool down before lifting lid off to allow steam to diminish
