Nmea 2000 fast ais update
Had an old gx1200 vhf. Display was bad after 6 years. It used nmea 183 for ais. New model is much faster updates. Nmea 2000 dual channel.

Solid VHF Radio with extra features
I was looking for a marine VHF radio that could receive AIS signals from nearby boats/ships, had to have builtin GPS antenna (though it supports an external antenna if needed) and had a NMEA2K interface. This radio has all that plus foghorn output on an optionally installed PA speaker. Very happy with Standard Horizon, including their portables.

Very happy with this radio! Connected AIS to my Garmin chart plotter on a NMEA 2000 network and AIS targets and warnings pop right up. Great safety feature. Did connect a hailer but it was too close to the mic and got lots of feedback. Radio functions/options take some time to figure out, mostly because there are a lot of them. Sound quality and transmission are great.

On the great loop. I want to like this radio but...
We have had nothing but trouble with our SH gx2400 with our scenario. We bought it to replace our Garmin 200 vhf which worked flawlessly but had a fist mic with deteriorating cable. We bought the SH because we could not find a reasonable replacement for the fist mic.Enter standard horizons. We were able to install the radio, enter our MMIS number, and get it to transmit. It worked for about a week, mostly. There were some early problems. We had trouble getting the Garmin system to transmit GPS data over our nmea 2000 network. We know the connection is working because we're getting good AIS receive data. This would not normally be a problem, but the radio blares a can't get position data warning twice, once a few minutes after startup and once after 5-10 minutes or so.Now, we're having trouble with the fist mic. The PTT sticks on, and there's no indication that this is happening. We've been relegated to our backup handheld radio heading into New Jersey, one of the busiest places on the loop. The problem is the radio, not our installation as we can see *most* elements of the radio work by using our other electronic equipment, and we can verify that the microphone is stuck on by using our handheld and getting the corresponding feedback loop.I don't know what we're going to do about getting a replacement. We bought at a competitor, not Amazon. Now we're running without an installed VHF, and without AIS. Not good.I just wanted folks to know about our experience before depending on this important piece of safety equipment like we did.

Buy with caution in the PNW
I purchased this product in February 2022. It worked great up until July 2022, I would have given a 5 star rating then. We took a trip to the San Juan Islands in July 2022 and started experiencing random freezes. I would first notice that AIS targets would disappear from my chart plotter and then realize the radio was frozen. None of the buttons or knobs would command any changes to the radio including the power button. I could not send or receive any transmissions. The only way to rectify this was to turn off the breaker to cut the power to the radio and turn it back on. Upon returning to my normal cruising grounds near Tacoma, WA I continued experiencing these random failures but they were few and far between. That is until May of this year, the radio froze every time I turned it on. I routinely listen to VTS so I can confirm I received transmissions, I would see AIS targets on the chartplotter, then within about 2 minutes the radio would freeze and I would lose AIS and the ability to use the radio. When I contacted Standard Horizon support, they said they were aware that other boaters in the PNW were experiencing similar issues, mostly around Northern Puget Sound. They had no fix at the moment and offered no guidance and pushed back when I requested the radio be sent in for warranty inspection/repair as they said the other radios with similar issues were bench tested and passed. I pushed back and sent in the radio and they have had it for 5 weeks with no updates.
