UnidenUSB-1 Scanner Radio PC Interface Cable

I ordered this cable for my now obsolete UNIDEN BC95XLT scanner because I got tired of manually reprogramming it. The software (ARC95) was "supposedly" still available, so I downloaded it and when I plugged the cable in, it recognized the scanner, but the software was a demo version that would only allow downloading the first three banks - they appear to be out of business so you can't upgrade. Other popular radio/scanner programming software like CHIRP does not recognize this old scanner. I guess that's "progress".

This works perfectly with my second-hand BCD396XT, unlike the FTDI cable it came with which refused to communicate with the scanner, even though everything looked fine in the settings, etc. This cable saved me from losing my mind after fighting with that other cable for a few days. I'm using this with the ARC-XT Basic software running on a Win10P/64 VM, using VirtualBox on my iMac. No problems there or using the cable in my USB3 hub. I also used this cable with Uniden's software to update the firmware on the scanner.The cable arrived in a plastic bag, with a sticker over the standard USB plug which warned to install the driver software before plugging in the cable. There was no documentation or hint where to get these drivers though. A sheet of paper with instructions or a URL would have been nice... But after a little Googling I found drivers on Uniden's website, as well as what appeared to be more current drivers on the Scanner Master site. I opted to install the latter, following the instructions in their readme file, and everything worked flawlessly.

I was a little concerned when this arrived with no instructions, but I contacted the seller and they sent a link to Uniden's driver download site. Downloaded the driver and it installed cleanly. Downloaded Freescan from Google and it installed cleanly. Plugged the cable into the PC and the driver connected it to COM port 3 when I looked in Devices. Set the port to 3 in Freescan, plugged into the BC246T, clicked Test, and it said it was ready. Successfully downloaded all the data from the scanner. Now all I need to do is learn how to use Freescan. (Purchaser's spouse)

The cable worked fine with Freescan and my BCD99T. It also worked with the BCD99T_UASD software and the BCD996T scanner. It's nice to be able to replace my old DB9 serial cable with a new USB one. Since PCs don't really have serial ports any more I had to use my old one with a serial/USB adapter. This cable eliminates to need for the old serial adapter and cable. My USB-1 is connected to a USB hub and I have had to restart my system and hub to get it to work. I've had the same issue with other devices on that hub so I don't believe the USB-1 is the issue. Like many issues a powerdown and restart cures a multitude of ills.

Worked like a charm and would rather spend the extra money to get a brand name items sometimes instead of an off brand. Absolutely no issues with this!

Important Note: Uniden upgraded their USB cable with a new chip that does not play well with older trunking handsets. Before you buy, make sure what version you are using to link the cable to the radio. Not that tough to find as many radio reference organizations have very helpful information online,and also people you can talk to that do this every day. If you can't get, for example, an ope COM channel when programming the radio, you may have an outdated cable. Two fixes: buy the newer cable for a lot of money, or use your existing cable and look for a lower version of the driver for your existing cable.
