Llama Llama and the Bully Goat

Empowering
Both of my kids adore the Llama Llama books--so much so that we actually own them all. So, this one arrived on our doorstep the day it was published and the kids couldn't wait for me to read it to them.Bullying is a hot topic now, as it should be. A book such as Llama Llama and the Bully Goat is a good one. I'm a little wary of some of the anti-bullying messages out there, especially to younger kids. I think there is a distinct difference between being bullied and being picked on. I am not condoning kids picking on each other and I do believe that, if not addressed, children who pick on other children may become bullies. But, I also believe that there needs to be a difference in how kids are taught to deal with these situations. In the case of bullying, kids need to get adults involved. However, I believe that children need to learn how to stand up for themselves when it comes to being picked on. I know everyone will not agree with me on this. But, hey, I spent a week earlier this summer with 27 kids who came to me every single time someone sat in their chair because they were taught to always go to an adult. It was a very, very long week. But, back to the book....Dewdney does a good job walking this line. She doesn't portray the Bully Goat in a way that scares children, but even young kids will be able to recognize that his behavior is not okay. And she has Llama Llama and Nelly Gnu stand up to the Bully Goat before going to the teacher, which is a very important lesson! The later Llama Llama books have become more and more instructional, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I know that the seeds of bullying can be found in preschool classrooms, to Llama Llama and the Bully Goat may be just the book to pull out for a young child who is having trouble with a classmate.

We love llama llama books
My daughter had a kid at school like this that she would always complain about. I told her to do the same thing llama llama does but she didn’t want to hear it from me. After reading the book, she understood what to do. Although, now every time I joke with her about something she tells me not to be a bully goat. 🤦🏼♀️😂

Cute book with a clear message about how actions affect others
My son was having issues at school with pushing. I talked to him several times and thought that we had it worked out and then got a letter from the teacher 2 days later saying that it was still happening. Because my son loves to read and seems to retain messages from books with images better than a talking to from mom, I ordered several books on hitting/bullying for him. This was by far the one that stuck in his head the most with a very clear message on how hitting others makes them feel. He even told me that he didn't want to be a bully goat and that he would stop and think before he used his hands to hurt someone else. The pushing stopped.Of course, this isn't going to be the rule for everyone, but this is a cute book with a clear message that really helped us out. To be fair, this book really isn't about bullying as the Bully goat has one bad day at school where he is a jerk and mean to the other kids. Bullying to me is more than a bad day that gets magically resolved by one teacher and a stern talking to, but the book still has value.

good examples of bully situations
I purchased this after our daughter had her first mishandled bully situation in prek. Yes prek bully's exist and I felt awful she was not prepared because I thought it was her first school experience it should be positive not filled with fears of being bullied and the teachers were there to protect the children. Now that she's been exposed we are preparing her for kndergarten. I thought reading stories would be a good way to help. This book gets right to the point of bully behavior and it's not okay to act tha way. It shows the potential of the bully becoming a kind person with redirection and boundaries set by the teacher. Unfortunately I know not completely realistic to rely on the teacher to help or for the bully to change like in this story by it's a good intro to discussing bully behavior. Overall I'm pleased with the product. Good start to introduce the word "bully" and examples of bully behavior in school.

My son is in love with the Llama llama series
My son is in love with the Llama llama series. This book in particular is a favorite of his. He has trouble telling when someone is being nice and mean to him. Thanks to this book he's been able to make the distinction and label someone as a "bully goat" if they have been mean to him. When he is being mean to someone, I have found it useful to tell him not to be a "bully goat" in that situation. It seems to click for him now. He doesn't want to act like Gilroy and apologizes. He seems to think Anna Dewdney writes books for whatever situation he is going through and is starting to make request for books. If you're reading this Anna...my son would like a book with the theme "Llama Llama takes too many pictures with mommy's phone"!

"DELIGHTFUL, FUN-FILLED, AND EDUCATIONAL!"
Anna Dewdney delivers another Masterpiece in her bestselling Llama Llama children's series. This fun-filled story teaches children different situations they will be confronted with, and how to handle and combat bullying, through the experience that Llama Llama endured. As Llama Llama makes lots of new friends in school, he also has to deal with being teased from Gilroy Goat. At first, Llama llama didn't know what to do, but he learned how to handle bulling, in order to resolve the problem. Can Llama Llama and Gilroy become friends once again, after what Llama Llama experienced? The author highlights friendship, social skills, and bullies. The story is intriguing, and the colorful illustrations come to life. Children will love this new installment to the Llama Llama series. I know several children who love this series, and I will be gifting this book for the holidays. Highly recommended for young children, teachers, parents, and child-care providers!

This is a really good way to help kid become aware what a 'bully' ...
My four year old loves the Llama Llama books after reading Llama Llama Red Pajama, she calls me Mama Llama now! This is a really good way to help kid become aware what a 'bully' is, or just generally about kids being mean to each other, why that might happen, and how it can be rectified and everyone can get along... or something!! I'd really recommend it anyway, especially as little kids are starting school.

OK
The children didn't really sit and listen to this story. Now, they are 2.5 to 3 years old so just a little young. I think older preschool children would like it.

Ok, but not the best Llama Llama book
Not the best of the Llama Llama books, maybe designed for slightly older children, not young toddlers.

A really nice book on how to deal with bullying behavior from preschool to kindergarten age children to their peers.
For kids in elementary and junior high schools these strategies probably won't work so well. For preschool and kindergarten age children this is pretty much right on. My three year old daughter loves to have me read this book over and over again. We both really like it.
