Cool
I've picked up so many books recently I teach college English and I read short stories all the time for my students so I thought maybe I would read some more books and I've started so many books and read a chapter or two or a dozen pages and then I just put them aside.... Probably too much internet or TV or having a young daughter but I'd never make it past 45 minutes.... I saw this book mentioned this morning on I think it was lit hub weekly or lit up daily and I like the way it sounded... I like the voice...so I got a Kindle app and I bought my very first Kindle book and I started it this morning and I finished it around 6:00 in the evening.... Needless to say I enjoyed it very much....

First rate writing for a front row seat on a train wreck.
The prose for this debut novel promises much more to come. With luck that will be an engaging plot involving characters you can pull for or watch change or care about. Not much of that going on here. The critical praise seems earned by the writing, not the whole package. Will be watching and hoping!

An absolute gem of a book
I read this book in one sitting yesterday...it was one hell of a long sitting though as I was accompany my mom to the Department of Education of Puerto Ric, as she has been submitting paperwork for her retirement.First of all, the cover art:I got the book with the hard cover because of the design. It was that vintage aesthetic i find appealing without it being too lurid. The good: Genuine. I'm starved for books that center around ordinary and mundane people and so loved the ordinariness of the main character. Her descriptions were tangible. O aldonloked that while she is pregnant her pregnancy is not suffocating the quality of the story (like some shows and stories out there). I also like that while she was falling for an older woman it didn't really drown the reality of her life. It really is that realistic. Intergenerational queer attraction can be heartbreaking at times. The not so good:Some lengthy descriptions that dragged on a point. Could've used less wordiness.Overall:And absolute gem of a book. I didn't know it was a debut until the very end. I'm looking forward reading more from this authoress.

Young woman coming of age and finding herself while life is pressed on her.
I'm not one to get sucked into a book but when I do, I love reading! I heard about this book on NPR and decided to give it a try. I definitely found myself attracted to the writing style and overall plot. I really enjoyed the book pulling my emotions into a very uncomfortable space. The main character is so well developed through the book but has lots of mystery. The main character will make you feel for her, want to yell at her, but you are her best friend and the reader is the only one who gets to know most of her secrets. It is about a 18 year old with 18 year old issues so there's that but with so much complexity bc this 18 year old has some issues that will a captivate any audience. Over you must read this book bc I canโt ruin it for you but youโll be very intrigued by what you are reading.

Rich in texture but flimsy in substance
I was still waiting for the story to happen when I was three quarters through the book, and it turns out there was hardly a story at all. That fact was not obvious during the reading since the richly textured prose did a good job covering up the loose and shapeless story line. I feel I wasted a good afternoon listening to a dysfunctional person's meaningless rambling.

what's going on inside her
Live inside the head for several weeks of a Los Angeles girl pregnant, barely out of high school and in a boring job. Her alcoholic father has recently died. Her Korean mother works at K-Mart and is delighted that she'd having an American baby. The father of the baby lives in and the pizza girl is less than enthusiastic about the whole situation. Though pregnant, she begins drinking like her father. Hopeless, right? Not so fast. Her thoughts are entertainingas they jerk from pizza delivery to memories to wonderings. And then enter an older woman --- a muse and a mystery --- to mix her up and her move her forward. Also buy it for the cover art which captures so many plot elements --- freeways, pizza, pickles, a crummy little car, sad eyes

Really enjoyable read
I can really see who Jane is and what she is like to be around, saying little and giving even less away.Great read, although I wish it was longer, I want to know what happened next, especially how life turned out for Billy he seemed so sweet and earnest.

Interesting read
It was a easy read for not a regular reader. The story kept me hooked and I enjoyed it. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to start getting into the habit of reading.
