The Monkey King is a 2014 Hong Kong[]-Chinese[] fantasy film directed by Cheang Pou-soi and starring Donnie Yen as the titular protagonist. Yen also serves as the film's action director. Production began in Beijing on 18 October 2010 and was filmed in 3D. The plot is based on an episode of Journey to the West, a Chinese literary classic written in the Ming Dynasty by Wu Cheng'en. It was released on 31 January 2014.

Beautiful and fun too
Donnie yen, chow Yun Fat and AAron Kwok make for a great movie. Take the stars and run into the fun. This is a very beautiful movie all on a very grand scale. The story is a bunch of fun as is the Monkey King. The story goes like this the Monkey King is freed and he needs to be trianed because he is a creature of good and evil. Well he is lied to and turns evil and there is destruction all over the place. This is fun but I have no idea where this one is is it the first , i don't know. It was good and should be fun to watch.

Good Story, but needs better letter boxing.
Honestly the movie is gorgeous, and fantastic graphic, I love Donnie Yen (not Chen, Yen is know for Ipman, Heros, Star wars rouge one, Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon) his pole work is fantastic, and he does a great monkey king, which is one of the hardest characters to play good. The move has some fantastic wire work int he fight scenes and it breaks you heart when the kill off Ruxue.The only thing I could really wish for is better letter boxing on the captions, often the scenery and back ground hid the captions and you couldn't read it well. Otherwise I know this is one of China's favorite stories and I have the story of the Monkey King since I was old enough to watch moveis and saw it back in '59 / '60 in Okinawa Japan on the big screen.

First ten minutes rock! A meandering fairy tale with pretty good action here and there
I'm a huge fan of both these wuxia stars, and leapt at the chance to see them together. The opening ten minutes which set the stage for the conflict between opposing forces of "good" and "evil" was absolutely fabulous, and the DVD is worth keeping just for that! But the story of the Monkey King, which I have seen in various printed, animated, and live action versions, falters along the way. Donnie Yen is a fabulous martial artist and has fun being a monkey; he definitely has monkey physicality down. But he spends too much screen time hamming it up with clownlike expressions. I take my kung fu movies and my Monkey Kings a little more seriously. Five stars for the opening confrontation and for the occasional action. One star for the rest... a meandering fairy tale. Averages out to 3 stars.

Time is precious
The movie itself is a good movie my gripe is as follows. 1 the package was lost and took nearly 2 weeks to get to me. 2nd the case was damaged

My Favorite Mythology.
Though a slightly changed version of the story, it is still quite a ride. personally I'm looking forward to buying the second and third installment. it's all in Chinese with English subtitles, and I can honestly say, this is my favorite Chinese movie, of all time.

Monkey King-Havoc in Heavens Palace a grea, fun experience.
My husband saw this movie on Amazon and since we like different movies we purchased it, WE loved it.. Even though it has English subtitles ā¦ you are able to keep up with the entire movie. We have ordered Monkey King 2 and 3 as well.

The Monkey King movie is Very Entertaining!
I really enjoyed watching this Monkey King part 1 movie. The special effects are superb. I'm very glad that the movie is in mandarin and not dubbed in english.

Monkey's origin story
Monkey's origin story good fun but does suffer somewhat from a feeling of budget limits. If you still remember the series Monkey you'll like this.
