Red Sonja Volume 2: The Art of Blood and Fire (RED SONJA TP (NEW))

Great but may be limited in scope
Gail Simone gets how to make Red Sonja sparkle: strong art, pulp story arcs, and shiningly witty dialogue. Walter Geovanni and Ivan Rodriguez's art is stunning even if it is highly cheesecake-driven. The meta-awareness of Sonja brings levity to what can otherwise be a grim, Robert E. Howard-rip-off style affair. That said, it is a little disappointing that aside from the name of an ale, most of the Hyperborean setting is dropped. While this is enjoyable and top of the form, I do wonder if this can sustain a comic for a long time.

Sonja gets put through ringer.
Red Sonja and Gail Simone are back in their second volume. In this arc, an emperor has learned that he's dying, and wants Sonja to gather the best artisans in the land for his going away party. He promises to free 1,000 slaves if she can pull it off in time.On the plus side, this volume has fantastic assortment of characters. All of the artisans gathered are quirky, pleasant people, and play off of Sonja's brusque demeanor well. On the downside, it goes a little overboard on Kafka comedy at Sonja's expense. She spends the whole six issues, tired, horny, and in desperate need of a bath, and the jokes get old before long. But it was still a fun read.

Lighter in tone than Vol. 1, good, fun read
I didn't have a lot of hope for Red Sonja when I first picked these up, but so far I've been pleasantly surprised. Volume 1 was pretty grim, so the lighter heartedness of this volume was just the thing.

Glad I gave it a shot
I'll confess I never had much interest in Red Sonja until I started following Gail SImone on Twitter. I gave it a try because a few issues were included in a Humble Bundle and I was pleasantly surprised. I had judged this book wrongly from its cover. I expected a pretty empty plot showcasing as much T&A as they could fit between the 30-some-odd pages of each issue. That was my bad. Sonja's awesome. Bad-ass, funny, righteous, and aesthetically... well-drawn. The Art of Blood and Fire was a very fun premise that was carried out efficiently. The humor and situations got a little blue (as we say here in the 1940s) but only for the benefit of the story. Good read, even if you aren't usually into barbarian-type titles.

doesn't care much for pretty clothes, and couldn't care less what others think ...
I used to read Conan the Barbarian comics as a teenager. And Red Sonja appeared from time to time in there. And she always kicked ass. Gail Simone's Red Sonja kicks ass AND allows you to relate with her. She is horny, filthy, doesn't care much for pretty clothes, and couldn't care less what others think (men or women). But she kicks ass, and while she is an extraordinary warrior, she still has shortcomings and can have emotional weaknesses. Like I said, you can relate to her. After all, she's only human. One of the best "classic" sword & sorcery comics I've read in a long time.

Best Sonja Ever!
Gail Simone just wrote the equivalent of Miller's TDKR for Red Sonja. Masterwork. One of best trilogies ever writen in sword & sorcery comic books, and the best Red Sonja Arch Ever! And Giovanni adds the precise and more than appropiate art.Get the 3 Simone/Giovanni Volumes!

Fazit: Super Artwork, super Story, allerbeste Unterhaltung!
